Biological Benefits of Ryhthm

The use of rhythm as a healing tool is not a new concept. In fact, it is one that has been around for as long as we can tell. Cutting-edge research in psychoneuroimmunology and mind-body medicine now shows us that rhythm can also enhance our immune system at the cellular level.

In 2000, Dr Barry Bittman, performed the first biological research, documenting the impact of group drumming on immune function. He and his team developed a group-drumming protocol called HealthRhythms and demonstrated that group drumming could enhance immune function. After just one hour of drumming, participants in the study had dramatically increased levels of natural immune function. Measuring levels of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), cortisol, Natural Killer (NK) cell activity and other cytokines, Bittman was able to demonstrate the efficacy of his concept. For much more information on this research or to receive training in these rhythms protocols, you can check out healthrhythms by drum manufacturer, Remo, here.

The HeartRythyms protocols emphasize the benefits of group drumming, having an advantage over just listening to the music, participants in the drumming itself had better results.

In another study in Japan, researchers were able to duplicate Bittman’s findings, showing the cross-cultral applicability of these protocols.

These active drumming protocols developed by Bittman and his team have proven to bring various health benefits, including exercise, self-expression, reduced stress and group synch in addition to the immunological factors already presented.

With so many things indicating the benefits of rhythm, why would we not just incorporate more of it into our lives? Life is innately made of rhythm and as it turns out, rhythm is an excellent way to heal the body. Who doesn’t love the sound of a good beat? What are you waiting for? Imagine all the health benefits you stand to gain, by tapping out some rhythm with your pals.
