Sonic Tonic: Sing the Body by Gabrielle Roth & The Mirrors

For the past two months, we have been exploring the healing properties of rhythm. We explored Gabrielle Roth’s concept of 5 Rhythms in depth and listened to examples of each of the rhythms: Flowing, Staccato, Chaos, Lyrical and Stillness.

Christine Stevens in her book Sound Medicine calls Rhythm, “Medicine for the Body” If the body is our temple, rhythm grounds us in the body, reminds us we are vibration and we are born to move.

Today’s Sonic Tonic comes full closes this full circle of rhythm with a new release by Raven Recordings, Which was originally released in the early eighties by Gabrielle and her band, the Mirrors.

The story about this recording is an excellent example of how Gabrielle Roth embodied rhythm.

This was back in the day when we were first trying out the recording process. It was scary – 8 or 9 musicians in the studio, 24 tracks, live, and a gazillion dollars per hour. We had rehearsed for a week or so and actually had music charts to follow. Five minutes before the engineer pressed the RECORD button, Gabrielle walked into the studio and tore up the charts. “I’ll dance; you play,” she said. She did. We did.

This half-hour recording is a complete sonic journey through the 5 Rhythms in one track. Imagine a jam session led by a dancer. Awesome! Talk about living in the moment, spontaneous and free.

Today’s sonic tonic calls us to explore the rhythms carefree and sans agenda, just let go and be the music!
